Dartmouth and the Indian Institute of Science have agreed to a formal collaboration designed to advance academic and scientific frontiers globally.

The partnership brings together two premier institutions renowned for their commitment to interdisciplinary studies and innovation.

“I had the pleasure of visiting IISc last December with a delegation from Dartmouth, and we were graciously received. Already dozens of faculty members and researchers from both institutions across disciplines—including engineering, economics, earth sciences, chemistry, and medicine—are eager to explore new collaborations,” says . “We look forward to the groundbreaking ideas that will emerge from this international partnership.”

The initiative is part of , a program that enhances strategic international collaborations, fortifying research partnerships and promoting educational exchanges.

“Formalizing this partnership allows us to forge new connections, expanding opportunities for our students and scholars. By harnessing each other’s strengths, we aim to discover innovative answers to pressing global challenges,” says Vice Provost for Academic and International Affairs .

India, with its booming economy—having —stands as a key player on the global stage.

, faculty director of the , underscores the partnership’s timely relevance: “Insights gained through our collaboration can help address the challenges and opportunities arising from the increasing global energy demand. This partnership is primed to drive innovation.”

Based in Bengaluru, the Indian Institute of Science is recognized as an Institution of Eminence by the government of India and hosts over 500 faculty members and 4,800 post-baccalaureate students, alongside a growing undergraduate program. The partnership opens myriad opportunities for faculty and students, facilitating research initiatives, symposia, and international studies.

The signing of a memorandum of understanding by Dartmouth and the IISc reflects a journey defined by personal connections and a shared vision for collaboration. 

“Our longstanding relationships with leaders from both institutions have shaped a collaborative framework based on trust and shared objectives,” says , the research program coordinator at the Irving Institute who was instrumental in the initiative.

“We are delighted to partner with Dartmouth to explore new research and educational programs in diverse areas,” says Abhishek Singh, chair of the Office of International Relations at the IISc. “This collaboration is a major step forward in our efforts to increase IISc’s international reach. It will greatly help researchers and students at both universities leverage new learnings and insights to address important global challenges.”

Parker notes that the formalized partnership “stands as a testament to the power of personal relationships, sustained effort, and a unified vision for what can be achieved when communities come together with purpose.”
