The Alpha of New Hampshire Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at Dartmouth inducted 125 new members at its spring meeting on June 14, in a ceremony that brought together students, families, alumni, and faculty to honor the students¡¯ exceptional academic achievement.
Phi Beta Kappa, one of the nation¡¯s oldest honor societies, was founded in 1776 at the College of William & Mary and has since expanded to include chapters at over 290 of the nation¡¯s leading colleges and universities. Its fourth chapter was founded at Dartmouth in 1787.
The ceremony was held in a tent outside the Life Sciences Center as part of Commencement weekend.
Acting Chapter President , emeritus professor of psychological and brain sciences, welcomed guests and acknowledged the indispensable role of friends and family in students¡¯ academic journey.
¡°Dartmouth prides itself on providing its students with a liberal arts education, and in order to graduate, a student must take courses in a broad range of disciplines,¡± Hull said. ¡°What that means is that today, we are honoring students who have uniformly performed at an exceptional level across a broad variety of disciplines, in addition to their focus studies in their majors. I think that you will agree that this is truly something to celebrate.¡±
Chapter Marshal , professor of English and creative writing, led the inductees to their seats amidst cheers and applause.
Secretary-Treasurer , director of Arts and Sciences finance and research administration, went over the categories of membership and the criteria for election to the society.
, Robert Clements Professor of Democracy and Politics, in his role as acting chapter vice president, presented a summary of the society¡¯s history.
¡°Phi Beta Kappa was founded in a moment of optimism, of great hope, not only for the capacity of human beings to learn, but for the capacity of human beings to bring their learning into the world,¡± Muirhead said. He highlighted friendship, morality, and intellectual excellence as core values prized by members of the organization.
Members who were elected in fall 2024 were recognized by Hull before the 125 new inductees were invited to to sign their names to the Phi Beta Kappa roster, receive their citations, and pledge to adhere to the principles of honors society.
Vyshali Manivannan ¡¯05, assistant professor in the Department of English, Writing and Cultural Studies at Pace University, was inducted as an alumni member in absentia.
